Become an expert in managing large-scale, complex construction projects with an innovative, holistic approach.
Advances in technologies, resource shortages, complicated supply chains, ageing infrastructure, and the need for sustainable, futureproof buildings and infrastructure; the 21st-century construction industry is changing fast and is growing more and more complex, facing many challenges all at once. There is a great need for managers who can deal with this growing complexity, by combining management and digital skills, especially now that digitalisation is revolutionising the construction industry drastically. The Master’s in Construction Management & Engineering (CME) at the University of Twente will help you to develop a helicopter view of large construction projects, using an innovative and holistic approach.
In this two-year, English-taught Master’s, you will become an expert in overseeing large-scale construction projects. From constructing and maintaining roads to building skyscrapers, you will learn to oversee all processes involved, from the design and construction phase to the maintenance phase to eventually the demolition phase. This Master’s includes topics such as project and process management, circularity and sustainability, supply chain and digitisation, asset and value management, procurement, and Building Information Modelling (BIM).
You can start your studies in September or February. If you need to follow a Pre-Master’s first, you can start in September and continue with the Master’s in February.
The Master’s in Construction Management & Engineering is part of the 4TU.federation – a collaboration between four technical universities in the Netherlands. Thanks to this collaboration, you will be able to follow courses not only at the University of Twente, but also at Delft University of Technology and Eindhoven University of Technology. This way, you can benefit from the different strengths of each university and a wide selection of courses.
As a student, you have a great deal of freedom in tailoring your Master’s to your own interests and ambitions. There is plenty of elective space, and you can choose your direction within two unique profiles. You can choose to focus on the technological aspects of construction management and engineering within the profile Digital Technologies in Construction or concentrate more on the organisational aspects thereof within the profile Markets & Organisation of Construction.
If you choose to follow this Master’s, you can look forward to great career opportunities. Graduates find a job within a maximum of three months after obtaining their degree, many of them even within a month!
You will be able to find a job across the full spectrum of the building and construction industry, both in the Netherlands and abroad. You might work as a project manager, construction supervisor, technical consultant or project engineer, to name just a few of your options. Thanks to the broad, yet expert knowledge and skills you will gain in this Master’s, organisations will be eager to onboard you, from contractors to engineering and consultancy firms to government institutions.
Of course, you can also choose to first expand your specialist knowledge base by pursuing a PhD or PDEng programme as offered by UT’s Twente Graduate School (TGS). Or you could even start up your own company, like some of our former students did!
